Remote Monitoring
Remote monitoring lets you watch your railroad from outside your home network — check on things from your phone at a train show, from another room, or anywhere with internet access.
Open Throttle → Devices and sign in. That's it — your server's devices, their live serial logs and the layout's activity stream through DEJA Cloud automatically. No port forwarding, no router configuration, nothing extra to install.
Requirements
- Free — remote monitoring is part of DEJA; there is nothing to sign up for.
- DEJA Cloud sync enabled on your server (it is by default).
What you can watch
| Where | What |
|---|---|
| Devices | Every device on the layout and whether it's connected |
| Devices → a device | That device's live serial log, in and out, newest first. EX-CommandStation logs open with recent history from the command log |
| Devices → Activity | Turnout, effect, signal and sensor changes as they happen, plus layout counts |
| DCC-EX | The DCC command console |
How it works
While your server runs, it mirrors a device's serial traffic to your layout's private DEJA Cloud stream — but only while someone has that device's log open, so an idle layout costs nothing. Lines are batched a few times a second and anything older than ten minutes is cleaned up. Only members of your layout can see it, and nothing on your home network is exposed to the internet.
Troubleshooting
The serial log says "Connecting to server…"
The server has not seen you yet. It relays serial data only while a device log is open; give it a second, and check the Devices page shows the server online.
The serial log says "Relay off"
The server has DEJA Cloud disabled (ENABLE_DEJACLOUD=false, a developer setting). Remove it from ~/.deja/.env and run deja restart.
Nothing appears at all
- Check the server is running:
deja status - Check the Devices page shows the server online (green dot) — if not, the server can't reach DEJA Cloud.
